busy, busy weekend
There is a room in our house that has undergone constant change. It’s been practice space for a band, a workout center, a closet, completely empty and much much more. In December we decided it was time to claim this room and make it ours. And by that I mean we went to Home Depot to get a light bulb and walked out with paint and wood laminate flooring. Neither of us had any experience but for two intelligent people confidence is all you need.

This is the amount of dirt that was underneath the carpet and the padding - makes you think twice about how clean your carpets are. It also looks like the contractors used this as the 'spraypaint random shapes' room.

Any time you have an excuse to wear safety goggled you do it, because it's fun and makes you look badass.

Heath and his power tool expertise joined us on the second day for the floor installation. We couldn't have done it without him or his lovely wife, Kelsey.

At this point the men were doing such a good job that the girls went shopping. I'm not kidding. Sure, they were shopping for rugs to put on the new floors, but still, bitches be shopping.

We had to rent a drill from Home Depot that could bore into concrete and once again Heath's power tool knowledge was invaluable.
What made this weekend of home remodeling more fun and less of a chore was all the activities we interspersed amongst the work. After the first day we went to the lighthouse Christmas party and had a rocking good time. The next night the four worker bees stuck together and watched Princess Mononoke. But the best part of the weekend was all the food we ate. This is why I get excited for home improvement projects, Ranjana always pays me in delicious food.

Breakfast the day we started construction - Rosita's Al Pastor, only the best al pastor restaurant in Austin. We washed it down with two giant horchatas. My mouth is watering.

We had pad thai and a thai iced tea the next day before work and stopped by our Lebanese friend's house after the work was finished for some homemade hummus.

Kelsey (and her doodle, Stella) served li'l smokies with frilly toothpicks in the afternoon to keep morale high.

The reward for a job well done: Ranjana treated us to dinner at Perla's (not cheap). Heath had never tried oysters before and he got indoctrinated with some of the best I've ever tasted. Oysters aren't for everyone, but we gobbled these up real quick.

Bacon, lettuce and tomato. So simple, yet one of the best sandwich combinations of all time. It gets even better when you add soft-shelled crab and fancy french fries.
Since finishing the renovation we started calling our new room ‘the cold room’ because it gets quite cold without the carpet to keep it insulated, which is nice in the summer but bad in the winter. The decor of the cold room has continued to experience perpetual flux, but that’s a blog post for another day.
